Former Perfect Home Facility - Huntsville, AL

Project Description:
Former Perfect Home Facility, Huntsville, Alabama - lace manufacturer.

Services: TTL provided environmental consulting services for this project including phased-approach soil and ground-water investigations, an Alabama Risk-Based Corrective  Action (RBCA) evaluation, as well as remediation work scope development and execution for this former light manufacturing facility. The former lace manufacturing facility had experienced a release(s) of the solvent trichloroethylene (TCE) during  operations  in
the 1980s. On behalf of our client, TTL managed the project through the Alabama Department of Environmental Management's (ADEM) Brownfields / Voluntary Cleanup Program to successful closure and the issuance of a "Certification of Compliance" from the ADEM. Remedial services included the excavation and disposal of in excess of 150 tons of TCE-impacted soils.

Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium - Montgomery, AL

Project Description:
Riverwalk Stadium

Services: TTL provided geotechnical engineering consulting and construction materials testing services for Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium, home of the Montgomery Biscuits, an AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The site was developed utilizing features of several past on-site historic structures including a U-shaped railway depot built in the 1890s. TTL was part of a project team that overcame the challenges of a confined site, challenging subsurface conditions, as well as project scheduling and
budget constraints. TTL was able to employ a number of geotechnical engineering techniques in overcoming the challenges on this unique site including; subgrade stabilization by undercutting, the installation of underdrains, as well as the placement of a geogrid on the subgrade. Shallow footings, drilled shafts, mat foundations, and surcharging were all used on this project.

The Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium project was honored by receiving the 2005 Alabama Grand Award for Engineering Excellence as awarded by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Alabama.

Cypress Point Office Park - Tuscaloosa, AL

Project Description:
Cypress Point Office Park

Services: TTL provided geotechnical engineering consulting and construction materials testing services for Cypress Point Office Park, a two-story office building located on the banks of the Black Warrior River. The building had to be constructed over 40 feet of soft, saturated river deposits and required a finished floor elevation that exceeded the flood elevation of the Black Warrior River. Prior to the start of construction,    because    the    site   sloped
steeply toward the river, about 15 feet of fill was needed to bring the site up to grade, and a retaining wall was required on the river side of the structure to provide grade separation.

The challenges were addresses by building the first load transfer platform to be constructed in Alabama. Installation of the platform entailed installing 40-foot-long auger-cast piles on a 10-foot grid spacing. The load platform was then constructed by placing alternating layers of geogrid and crushed aggregate directly on top of the pile grid. Once the platform was in place, the retaining wall and the structural fill required to raise the site were constructed directly on the platform. The office building was constructed utilizing a conventional shallow foundation system.

The University of Alabama - Athletic Department - Tuscaloosa, AL

Project Description:
North End Zone Expansion including the addition of approximately 10,000 seats, a club level, skyboxes and a plaza entrance area.

Services:
TTL performed the subsurface investigation and provided deep and shallow foundation recommendations for the expansion. TTL monitored the installation of the deep foundations (auger-cast piles and drilled shafts) as well as provided construction materials testing and observations for soils, concrete, structural steel,  and  asphalt  for  the  expansion  and
observation of the installation of waterproofing, floor traffic sealant and column repairs in the older sections of the stadium. TTL personnel performed IBC special inspections during the construction of the expansion.

Unique Materials Study: Several of the stadium's north addition slabs required a topping material to attain finished grade elevation. The project structural engineer was concerned that the fasteners used in securing the metal stud tracks may not support the required lateral load. The University requested that TTL perform shear testing of the fasteners embedded in the topping. Two mock panels were constructed consisting of four inches of concrete and two inches of topping material. The fasteners were installed by the contractor through the test shear plates into the mock up slabs. The test and the equipment were performed and fabricated in general accordance with ASTM E 1190. The test results indicated the topping material was adequate to support the fasteners in shear. This allowed the project to proceed and meet schedule requirements.

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Health and Sciences Building - Tifton, GA

Project Description:
New two story building constructed on shallow concrete foundations, structural steel frame and masonry.

Services: TTL performed the subsurface investigation and provided foundation recommendations as well as general site preparation recommendations during the design phase of the project. Additionally, TTL provided construction monitoring and testing during the site grading, foundation installation, concrete placements, masonry construction, structural steel erection and parking lot construction. TTL performed IBC Special Inspection services for the project.

Lowes Regional Distribution Center - Valdosta, GA

Project Description:
Original construction was a 785,000 square foot distribution center with associated parking and truck docks built in 1996. An addition was constructed in 2005-2006 that consisted of a 350,000 square foot addition to the main building, a 250,000 square foot appliance storage warehouse and associated truck docks, trailer storage yards and automobile parking.

Services:
Geosciences, Inc. (now TTL, Inc) was the geotechnical consultant and provided all construction materials testing
services on the original site and facility. TTL provided supplemental geotechnical engineering and all construction materials testing and NPDES storm water inspection and sampling on the addition. Geosciences, Inc. (now TTL, Inc) has also provided geotechnical engineering and materials testing services for numerous Lowe's retail stores including stores in Dothan, AL; and Thomasville, Moultrie, Waycross, Valdosta and Albany, Georgia.

Vanderbilt Children's Hospital - Nashville, TN

Project Description: Geosciences Design Group, a TTL Company was responsible for evaluating the complex subsurface conditions and developing recommendations for the safe excavation and support of the new construction.

Services: For this project, exploration emphasized deep rock coring and air-rotary drilling. Foundations were rock bearing and required detailed inspection to confirm the required bearing capacity for the heavy column loads. The site was located on the campus near the existing hospital complex.
The structure excavation was immediately adjacent to three streets and an eight-story parking garage. Groundwater inflows were considerable and creative solutions were investigated for the handling and possible use of the water. Construction required full-time inspection and testing by experienced technicians. Typical activities included inspection of reinforcing steel placement, monitoring concrete placements, molding of concrete specimens for testing and structural steel inspection. Floor slabs were post-tensioned and were tested for compliance with flatness and levelness criteria (Ff/Fl).
